What is Future Problem Solving?
Future Problem Solving is a programme for gifted and
talented students that teaches them to work cooperatively
to solve problems based on some of the major global
issues facing the world now and in the future. Through
a six-step creative problem solving process they learn
higher level thinking skills in authentic contexts.

Who facilitates the FPSNZ Evaluators'
e-Learning Course?
Each trainee evaluator will be assigned a personal
facilitator as a mentor throughout the course. The facilitators
are all highly skilled, experienced evaluators who have
evaluated for a number of years and are members of the
national evaluation team that evaluates at the national
finals each year. All of our facilitators have also
evaluated at the International finals in the USA.
Click here to see profiles of our facilitators.
How much does it cost to complete
the FPSNZ Evaluators' e-Learning Course?
The FPSNZ Evaluators' e-learning course is, at present,
free to anyone in New Zealand who is committed to becoming
an evaluator.
Who can become an Evaluator?
We welcome anyone who is interested in helping our
students to improve their thinking skills. To be a good
evaluator you need to
- be open-minded and tolerant of differing points
of view
- be able to think creatively and critically,
- have good analytical ability
- be able to communicate effectively with students
through written feedback.
You do not have to be a teacher to become an evaluator.
Our national team includes an optometrist and a doctor.
Having an understanding of the FPS process is very helpful,
but not essential.
FPS evaluation is great for retired teachers who would
like to keep some involvement in enhancing the learning
of students.

Can FPS students become evaluators?
Some of our best evaluators are students and ex-students
of the programme. It is best for students to have at
least one year’s experience in the programme before
becoming evaluators. You must be a senior (Yr 11- 13)
to become an evaluator. If you are in Yr 10 and wish
to train, you need to supply us with a letter of recommendation
from your coach.
Contact Julie Styan fps@ihug.co.nz
for further information.
How much do evaluators get paid?
Accredited FPSNZ Evaluators are paid as follows
- $10.00 a booklet for the first 6 booklets on any
global issue
- $12.00 a booklet for 7-12 booklets on any global
issue
- $14.00 for 13+ booklets on any global issue
- Payments are also made for second round and national
finals evaluations.
What happens when I complete the FPSNZ
Evaluators' e-learning course?
On successful completion of this course you will receive
an evaluator’s handbook, plus a certificate recognising
your successful completion of the online e-learning
course. You will then become a member of the national
evaluation team and will receive booklets to mark for
the next appropriate global issue. Generally we try
to send you no more than 3 or 4 booklets first time
around.
What if I don’t live in NZ can
I still complete the FPSNZ Evaluators'
e-Learning Course?
At present we are only able to train FPSNZ evaluators.
